An Open Letter to My In-Laws Who Give Us Breath (and Babysitting)

Dear Mom & Dad,

I don’t say this nearly enough, so here it is in plain words: you are lifesavers. Literal life and sanity savers. You swoop in when chaos hits like a toddler tornado or a cyber-school day meltdown, and suddenly, the world doesn’t feel so heavy.

To my Pinoy roots: you get it. You grew up learning that love is measured not just in words but in deeds. Five siblings fed, a karinderia run, laundry stacked sky-high, and somehow managing to make adobo taste better than therapy. You’ve passed down that lesson to us, showing up, stepping in, and giving love through your actions.

To my American side: you get it too. You understand the value of a quiet evening, the relief of a Friday night without chores, and the joy of hearing, “Yes, we can take the kids today,” without hesitation. You show us that parenting is never meant to be a solo marathon. It is a relay race, and every handoff matters.

You give us more than babysitting. You give us breath. A moment to shower without interruption. A cup of coffee that is still hot. A chance to remember what adult conversation sounds like. And yes, even a tiny break from hearing “Mommy, why?” for the 237th time today.

But it is not just the breaks, the snacks, or the extra hands that matter. It is the lessons our children learn from you. They learn patience from your calm, resilience from your persistence, and kindness from your example. They see that family does not end at the nuclear household. Love can expand in ways that are quiet but transformative. They learn gratitude by watching how you give without expecting anything in return.

And let us be honest. The humor matters too. From your playful teasing to the shared laughter over small daily moments, you remind us that joy can live in the messy, chaotic, imperfect parts of life. You show us that even in exhaustion, there is love. Even in overwhelm, there is laughter.

So, from the bottom of our tired, coffee-fueled hearts…

Thank you so much!

…for your support, cultural wisdom, unconditional love, and the moments that let us breathe and reset.

You give us freedom, confidence, and perspective. You remind us that the gift of family is not just in being together. It is in supporting each other to grow, to rest, and to love more fully.

We see you. We appreciate you. And one day, when the next generation needs guidance, we hope to pass on what you have shown us. Helping hands, open hearts, and laughter are the best legacies a family can leave.

With endless gratitude and a hint of awe,

Signed,
Jalyn
